Basilicas in Poland—Czestochowa

I blogged about the following church on March 6, 2020.

  • The Cathedral Basilica of the Holy Family in Czestochowa.

The Neo- Gothic Basilica was built between 1898 and 1912 and is the first church in Poland to be honored as a minor basilica.  It is a major expansion to an existing church (completed in 1877).  A cypress wood statue of Our Lady was brought to the church in 1904.

Declared a minor basilica by Pope Pius X in 1906.

The Basilica, also known as the Basilica of the Finding of the Holy Cross and the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of a monastery complex.  The Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa, which has the painting of the Black Madonna, is in a separate chapel in the complex.  The Gothic Basilica dates to the 1420s.  Renovations and chapel additions have been done in Baroque and Rococo styles.  More recent renovations were needed after a fire on August 15, 1900.
