Basilicas in Poland—Gniezno

Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Wloclawek, Kuyavia-Pomerania
Declared a minor basilica by Pope Pius X in 1907.
The Basilica is the Cathedral for the Diocese of Wloclawek. The current cathedral replaced two previous cathedrals. This Gothic church was primarily constructed between 1340 and 1411 although construction continued for a least another century. The church has some stained glass windows from the 14th Century and a painting of the Assumption from 1475.

Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Trzemeszno, Greater Poland
Declared a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI in 1969.
The church was initially built in a Romanesque style in the 12th Century. It was later rebuilt in a Gothic style and was yet again rebuilt in the 18th Century in a Baroque style. It was burned by German soldiers during the Second World War and then rebuilt.

Declared a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI in 1970.
This Romanesque church was built between 1120 and 1140. It is primarily made of sandstone.

Basilica of St. Vincent de Paul, Bydgoszez, Kuyavia-Pomerania
Declared a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1997.
The Neoclassical church was built between 1924 and 1938 as a parish church administered by the Missionary Fathers of St. Vincent de Paul. German troops occupied the church beginning in 1939. They profaned the church, stole items from the church, and burned it before they retreated in 1945. The church was able to reopen later in 1945 and restoration work continues.

Basilica of Our Lady Queen of Poland, Lichen Stary, Greater Poland
Declared a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 2005.
The building was constructed between 1994 and 2004 and is the largest church in Poland. It also has the largest pipe organ ensemble in Poland with five pipe organs. The church was built to commemorate possible apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at this location during the 19th Century.

Basilica of the Holy Name of Mary, Inowroclaw, Kuyavia-Pomerania
Declared a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008.
The Romanesque church was likely built at the end of the 12th Century. It is built with granite on top of a moraine. The church burned down in 1834 and was rebuilt by 1902. German troops turned the church into a furniture warehouse during the Second World War and stole the church bells. It was once again rebuilt in the early 1950s. The church has a 14th Century Gothic sculpture of the Madonna and Child made of linden wood.

Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe Zdunska Wola, Lodz
Declared a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008.
This eclectic church was built between 1872 and 1891 to replace an 18th Century building. St. Maximilian Kolbe was baptized here in 1894.

Basilica of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Bydgoszez, Kuyavia-Pomerania
Declared a minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2014.
The modern church was built between 1987 and 1991. It is built near the place where 1,200 people were executed by the Nazis.

Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Gorka Klasztorna, Greater Poland
Declared a minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2014.
The Blessed Virgin Mary is said to have appeared here in 1079 and a wooden chapel was built in 1111. This is considered to oldest place of Marian veneration in Poland. Water from a well is associated with miracles. Protestants burned the church in 1575 and filled the well in 1591. The current church was built in the early 18th Century. Today, it is staffed by the Missionaries of the Holy Family.

Basilica of Our Lady Queen of Love and Peace, Markowice, Kuyavia-Pomerania
Declared a minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2015.
The brick church was built in 1710 and has a statue of the Madonna and Child dating to 1630.

Collegiate Basilica of All Saints, Sieradz, Lodz
Declared a minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2018.
This Gothic brick church was built in 1370. The interior is decorated in Baroque and Rococo styles.
