Collegiate Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Shrine of St. Joseph,

Declared a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI in 1978.

A church was built here in the 14th Century and was largely rebuilt in the late 1700s in a Baroque style.  A picture of the Holy Family was given to the church in 1670 after a man was miraculously healed after praying for St. Joseph’s intercession.  Several hundred more possible miracles occurred in the next few decades.  In 1948, priests who had survived the Dachau concentration camp came here to give thanks.

Basilica Shrine of St. Joseph and Monastery of the Discalced Carmelites, Poznan, Greater Poland

Declared a minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2016.

Protestants built a church here in 1553 but Jesuit students burned it in 1616 during a religious war.  The Carmelites acquired the land in 1618 and the current church was constructed between 1658 and 1687.  It is the first church in Poland dedicated to St. Joseph.  Prussian officials used the church for secular purposes from 1801 to 1804 when they gave the church to the Lutherans.  After the First World War the church was once again given to the Catholics.  The Discalced Carmelites returned in 1945 and the church has been restored in its original Baroque style.

The church was built in the late 17th Century in a Gothic style.  Most of the building collapsed in 1783, except for the chancel, and it was reconstructed in a Baroque style in 1792.  Several priests imprisoned at Dachau concentration camp made a promise that if they survived, they would make a pilgrimage to this church which they did in 1948.  A painting of the Holy Family was probably dates to the 17th Century.

I blogged about the following basilica on February 28, 2020.

  • The Cathedral Basilica of St. James the Apostle in Szczecin.

Co-Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Kolobrzeg, West Pomerania

Declared a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1986.

The church is the co-cathedral of the Diocese of Koszalin-Kolobrzeg.  The Gothic church was likely built in the early 14th Century, but has been destroyed and rebuilt several times due to natural causes and warfare.  It became a Protestant church in the 16th Century.  After the Soviets nearly destroyed the church during the Second World War, Catholics rebuilt it in the 1950s.  Despite its rocky history, several items in the church have survived, including three Gothic wooden altars from around 1500, a bronze baptismal font from 1355, two 14th Century crucifixes, candlesticks dating to as early as 1327, and paintings dating to the 15th Century.
