Basilicas in Peru

I blogged about the following basilicas on July 3, 2020.

Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy, Lima

Declared a minor basilica by Pope Pius XI in 1924.

The church was built in 1535 using a Churrigueresque Baroque style.  A statue of Our Lady of Mercy dates to 1615.  Father Pedro Urraca was associated with this church in the 17th Century and is now declared Venerable.

Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and Convent of St. Dominic, Lima

Declared a minor basilica by Pope Pius XI in 1929.

The church and Dominican convent were initially built in the 16th Century, but potions have been rebuilt due to at least three earthquakes.  The architectural style is Rococo and Mudejar.  It was built at the same time as the University of San Marcos, the oldest university in the Western Hemisphere.  The church is also the final resting place of St. Rose of Lima and St. Martin de Porres.

Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy, Cusco, Cusco

Declared a minor basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1946.

The Mercedarian Order built a church here in 1535.  It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1650 and replaced by the current church between about 1651 and 1670.  The church has several different styles including Baroque, Neoclassical, and Renaissance.  The church was damaged by earthquakes in 1950 and 1986 but has been restored.  The church has a monstrance that weighs 49 pounds and is 51 inches tall.  It has 230 grams of gold and silver, 1538 pieces of diamonds and gemstones, 628 pearls, 312 amethysts, and other precious stones.

Basilica Shrine of Mary Help of Christians, Lima

Declared a minor basilica by Pope John XXIII in 1962.

The Byzantine Romanesque church was built between 1916 and 1924.  It is the main church for the Salesians in Peru.

Basilica of St. Francis, Lima

Declared a minor basilica by Pope John XXIII in 1963.

The Baroque church was completed by the Franciscans in 1672 to replace an earlier church destroyed by an earthquake in 1655.  The church is adorned with paintings by Peter Paul Rubens and his students and by the Spanish artist, Francisco de Zurbaran.

Cathedral Basilica of St. Charles Borromeo, Puno, Puno

Declared a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI in 1963.

The Basilica is the Cathedral for the Diocese of Puno.  It was built in 1757 using a style called Andean Baroque.  It has paintings from the 18th Century Cuzco School of painting.

Basilica of St. Rose of Lima, Lima

Declared a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1993.

The Basilica encloses the home of St. Rose of Lima (1586-1617).  She was canonized in 1671 and the Rococo church was completed in 1728.  It was remodeled in 1992 after street construction took some of the property.

Basilica of St. James the Apostle, Tiabaya, Arequipa

Declared a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.

The modern church was built in 1961 to replace an older building damaged by earthquakes.

Basilica of Our Lady of Carmel, Callao, El Callao

Declared a minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2014.

The church was built in the 17th Century to house a statue of Our Lady of Carmel.
